Background of the Study

Pain management is an essential aspect of post-surgical care, as inadequate pain relief can hinder recovery, prolong hospital stays, and negatively affect patients' quality of life. Nurses are key in assessing pain levels and implementing effective pain management strategies, including the administration of analgesics, use of alternative therapies, and patient education.

In Yobe State, where healthcare resources are often limited, ensuring that nurses are adequately trained in pain assessment and management is vital for improving post-surgical outcomes. This study investigates the role of nurses in assessing and managing pain in post-surgical patients and the impact of their practices on patient satisfaction and recovery.

Statement of the Problem

Inadequate pain management is a common issue in many healthcare facilities, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurses’ pain assessment and management practices in post-surgical patients in Yobe State hospitals, identifying potential gaps in practice and opportunities for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in pain assessment and management in post-surgical patients in Yobe State hospitals.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of pain management interventions provided by nurses in improving post-surgical recovery.

  3. To identify barriers to effective pain management in post-surgical patients in Yobe State hospitals.

Research Questions

  1. How do nurses assess and manage pain in post-surgical patients in Yobe State hospitals?

  2. What is the impact of nurses' pain management practices on post-surgical recovery and patient satisfaction?

  3. What barriers do nurses face in effectively managing pain in post-surgical patients in Yobe State hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Yobe State hospitals effectively assess and manage pain in post-surgical patients.

  2. Effective pain management by nurses improves post-surgical recovery and patient satisfaction in Yobe State hospitals.

  3. Barriers such as inadequate training and limited resources hinder nurses' ability to manage pain effectively in post-surgical patients in Yobe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on post-surgical patients in hospitals across Yobe State. Limitations may include variability in training and resources across different hospitals in the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pain Assessment: The process by which healthcare providers evaluate the level of pain experienced by a patient, typically using pain scales and patient feedback.

  • Post-Surgical Pain Management: The management of pain following surgery, involving pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
